Florida Wind Mitigation Inspection
If these protective features are properly installed, your home can qualify for wind and or windstorm credits with any Florida homeowners insurance company.
This can mean a substantial savings of up to 50% for homeowners.
What Is a Wind Mitigation Inspection?
In Florida, a wind mitigation inspection is performed by a licensed home inspector, general contractor, building contractor, architect, engineer or building inspector.
The information gathered is presented on a standard wind mitigation form, OIR-B1-1802, commonly referred to as the 1802 form. As of Feb 1, 2012, all inspections must have photos showing each feature listed on the wind mitigation form.
The uniform mitigation verification inspection form (form 1802), created by the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. It is divided into 7 sections and is used to verify the presence of windstorm mitigation features on a policyholder’s property so the insurer can calculate proper discounts. The form is valid for up to 5 years, provided that no material changes have been made to the structure.
Inspectors collect the following information during an inspection:
-
- the age of the home to determine what building code was in place at the time of construction
- the age of the roof, documentation to prove if the roof was installed to any certain building code
- the types of roofing materials
- the roof deck attachment
- roof to wall connection
- roof shape
- existence of a SWR (secondary water resistance)
- the opening protection of the doors and windows.

The majority of our clients do save money with a Wind Mitigation report and some have saved significantly.
These reports are relatively inexpensive. Anytime you can possibly save $1,000 or more over five years for an investment of $150 today, is generally considered money well invested.
Please call us if you want an honest and straightforward inspector.
FYI
If you need order an inspection or feel you may be eligible for discounts by submitting a report, do a little homework. Call the local building department and ask them for a list of permits on the home. If the home has hurricane shutters, check them for any data tags and find out if they are listed on the Miami-Dade Product Approval List. Contact the supplier if necessary. Provide this information to the inspector to make sure the report is accurate. If the roof is newer but there is no permit available, try to get as much information as you can such as a receipt for the work to prove the date of installation.
The more information you have for the inspector the more accurate the report will be and better your chances for a sizable discount.
